Amidst the heartbreak and tragedy of Black Saturday - The Victorian Bushfires that claimed the lives of hundreds and destroyed 2000 homes on February 7th 2009, there were some heart lifting stories. One of those stories was Sam the Koala. Sam the Koala has achieved worldwide fame since her rescuer, CFA Fireman David Tree found Sam wondering around the burnt out bushland. You can see the footage of this rescue in an earlier post. Almost a million people have now seen this video of when David Tree brought precious water to a bewildered and confused Sam. A few days after the rescue, Sam is reunited with David at an animal shelter.. and it is here that the plot thickens. Watch to find out more…

By Monday 9am on February 9th it was official. The Victorian Bushfires, later to be named Black Saturday had become Australia’s Worst Ever Natural Disaster in it’s young History. The ferocity of the firestorms were not fully realised, and the extent of the damage not completely known until late Sunday evening and early Monday morning. The death toll, once at 14 did climb dramatically once the Fires had burnt out and local police and fireman were able to access the devastated areas. It was then they discovered the true extent of destruction. The depths of Hell came to Victoria on February 7th, 2009. The current death toll stands at around 211 and almost 2000 homes have been destroyed. Even now fire still continues to burn in some parts of the state, out of control. Black Saturday has surpassed any disaster we as Australian’s have ever seen. This news report confirms it.

Black Saturday - The Victorian Bushfires that occurred on February 7th 2009 had by Monday February 9th been officially declared as Australia’s Worst Ever Natural Disaster. Some 100 plus lives and 800 homes had been lost at the time of this news report, and as it stands today the death toll is 211, with 2000 homes destroyed and these figures are still climbing. Our Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, clearly shaken in the video describes the Victorian Bushfires as “Mass Murder” with regard to the fact that some of the fires were deliberately lit.
The devastation that has been set upon Victorians due to the Bushfires of Black Saturday will last for many years to come. My prayers and thoughts go out to all of those affected by this tragedy.

The Victorian Bushfires have brought countless stories of heartbreak, tragedy, and sadness. There are a few stories out there of survival and some that are even uplifting. Sam’s story is of the former. Sam is one of the many who have lost everything. The Victorian Bushfires destroyed his home and claimed the lives of his beloved family. It is a sad story and as I type this, thinking about the pain he is going through now I am teary eyed. How Sam managed to pull it together to do this interview is hard to imagine. I can only think that he is most certainly numb and feels that this interview was the right thing to do to honour the memories of his beloved 5 year old daughter who he calls “Hairy Bum” and Tina, his wife. Sam I commend you for your resolve and I realise that words can do very little to help ease your pain. Regardless if that mate, my thoughts and prayers are with you and I hope that as hard as it may be, you treasure the grand memories you have of your beautiful girls. My deepest sympathies to you mate.
My deepest sympathies to all who have lost so much as a result of the Victorian Bushfires.

In a previous post I gave tribute to the brave men and women of the CFA whose efforts in fighting the Victorian Bushfires were truly outstanding. There were of course those people who were just as Heroic, putting their lives at risk to save others. Brad Price was one of those people. With burns and injured eyes Brad managed to rescue over 12 people and his beloved dog. A truly amazing story of courage and bravery. It is these ordinary Australian’s who during the Country’s darkest hours, portray true Aussie Grit and Spirit.
The Victorian Bushfires have claimed 209 live so far.. if not for Brad Price this figure would be higher. Here is Brad’s story…

Up until February 7th 2009, the day known as Ash Wednesday (February 16th 1983) was all but the worst Bushfire Disaster to every hit Victoria. Within twelve hours, more than 180 fires fanned by winds of up to 110 km (68 mph) per hour caused widespread destruction across the states of Victoria and South Australia.Years of severe drought and extreme weather combined to create one of Australia’s worst fire days in a century. The fires are the second deadliest bushfire disaster in Australian history—only the 2009 Victorian bushfires have claimed more lives. The Ash Wednesday Fires claimed 75 lives in total (47 in Victoria) and destroyed some 2500 properties and homes. The Victorian Bushfires of 2009 have so far claimed 201 lives and destroyed 1839 homes.
Below is a Video that looks at the day known as “Hell On Earth” in comparison to Ash Wednesday. Eerily similar in nature, both days brought widespread devastation and grief to the people of Victoria.

The Victorian Bushfires that destroyed the lives of thousands of fellow Aussies on February 7th 2009 were nothing short of horrific. Amongst the chaos and devastation there were 100,000 plus Volunteer Firefighters from the CFA risking their lives and fighting a Firestorm that was to become Australia’s Worst ever Bushfire and Natural Disaster. These men and women of the CFA put their lives on the line each and every year and their bravery and courage in Victoria’s Darkest hour is nothing short of outstanding. Although helpless to stop the ferocity of the Victorian Bushfires, these men and women became the only line of defence and as I write this they continue to fight fires that are still burning in Victoria.
The video below is a tribute to the spirit and courage of the Volunteers of the CFA. As an Australian and Victorian, I thank you for your tireless efforts and bravery.
Please help me pay tribute to the Heroes amongst the insanity of the Victorian Bushfires and watch the following video

Amongst the devastation of the Victorian Bushfires a Koala… later to be named “Sam” was to be rescued by one of the CFA’s finest. Below is the Raw video footage taken of Sam the Koala being rescued. An amazing video in that normally you would be lucky to even see a Koala let alone have one drinking out of a Water Bottle, and it’s paw in the palm of your hand. Just one of the uplifting stories that has come out of the Victorian Bushfire tragedy. If you have yet to pledge your support to those who have lost everything. please do so by following the links posted after this entry, or on the home page of this blog.
